Her wings
A recent visit to a friend’s shop brought home much more than I intended. It’s hard to resist when there’s a particularly gorgeous little 2 year old ooh-ing and ahh-ing and excited about everything. Sophia wanted to try her new things as soon as we were home. ”Fairwie” wings, a trumpet, and 3 sparkly golden indian bangles (thank you Suzy!). Together with her tutu and “lallet” shoes, she looked so enchantedly cute that I had to take a few shots of her. My Sophia Fairy, finding her wings… M x
And my heart flies… xx

Cooper & Gemma
Cooper and Gemma were visiting chilly Melbourne from sunny Brisbane last week. Fortunately, they brought the sunshine with them, as we were greeted with a wonderfully clear morning, although a little icy at first! Their Mum and I chatted while Gemma ran after Cooper, and I snapped away. Cooper, who just turned 5, told me all about his Melbourne birthday holiday, his favourite movies and the snow. Gemma, who is 2, was happy just to follow and hardly stopped smiling the entire time. They were so full of infectious energy and it was fantastic to photograph them. I hope you enjoy these shots of our morning together. M x

The opposite of smiling
I’m currently participating in a workshop alongside some of the wonderful photographers I met during the previous workshop I took part in earlier this year. It’s lovely to have them with me again. I’m so impressed with the work I’ve seen come from the retreat so far. A self portrait was part of the first week’s projects. To move away from the usually smiley and colourful past photos of myself, I thought I might do the opposite to keep things interesting! And I’ll share it with you here… I promise, I’m happy on the inside. M x

Challenge love
I’m well overdue for another update on my July Challenge photos! I took a walk around the block for two of these shots. The other two were captured at home. I think the last photo is most appropriate here – you need only look around you to find wonderful things to photograph. M x
Day 21 – Fence
Day 22 – Seashell
Day 23 – Vine
Day 24 – Glasses

In love with the ordinary
Many of you have told me how much you enjoy my photos of Sophia… this post is for you! Just an ordinary afternoon at home, me and her. But how lovely the everyday can be! M x

Oliver & Amelia
It was my pleasure to photograph two very beautiful children last week. Oliver is fantastic in front of a camera and delighted me with his energy and chatter. Amelia is quiet, delicate, but so confident. We had a wonderful time in the park, racing around under the morning sunlight. I have seen these two grow up over time and they are truly lovely children to be around. Please enjoy the photos of our little shoot together. M x

Brand new
Welcome to the brand new, shiny, improved, hopefully fabulous blog ~ and website for Mel Riddell! Please have a look around and make yourselves at home. This has been an extremely steep learning curve for me (sometimes resulting in sliding backwards a few feet here and there) but I have to say, I’m really proud that I managed to put this together and I hope you will love it too. There have been many ‘light bulb moments’ along the journey as difficult things suddenly became clear (inspiring the accompanying photo) and I never would have been able to do it without the support of all of you. I want to thank the very talented Lib Creative for designing my beautiful home page ‘Mel Riddell’ logo, and for my lovely friend Jody for explaining things to me at the start. I would love to hear any feedback you have about the site. Keep watching for more photos from last week’s shoot! M x

Following my last post about the July Challenge, here is Day 9 – Opposites. What more appropriate theme for a photographer? M x

Challenging July
Last month I took part in a 30 Day Photography Challenge (you can read about it here). Some of my photography friends and I enjoyed it so much, we decided we would try a new one for July. I’m doing my best to keep up with as many days as possible. It’s such an addictive activity, waiting for each day’s topic and searching for the best answer to it. I wanted to share with you two photos from this month so far… Day 3 – Insect, and Day 7 – Glass. M x
